UK sexual health clinics: 14 day wait not unusual, survey shows
Far from being an open access system, figures released
this week show that genitourinary medicine in the UK is afflicted by
shrinking opening hours, lengthening queues and funds that never make it
to the intended source
UK government will not introduce mandatory HIV tests for migrants
The UK government will not be introducing compulsory HIV
tests for immigrants, according to UK press reports. Earlier this year
government ministers ordered civil servants to examine the feasibility
of introducing compulsory HIV tests for migrants from countries with a
high HIV prevalence.
Mixed report on UK's sexual health issued
Latest government statistics paint a mixed picture of
the UK’s sexual health. Figures released by the Health Protection Agency
(HPA) on July 27th show that in 2003 there was an overall increase of
4% in the number of new diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections
(STIs) over the year before, including a sharp rise in new syphilis
diagnoses. However, the figures also show that there was a decline in
new cases of some bacterial and viral infections
BMJ editorial backs 'essential and effective' condoms for HIV prevention
A robust defence of the importance of condoms in
preventing the spread of HIV is contained in an editorial in the July
24th edition of the British Medical Journal.
Undetectable viral load associated with unprotected sex amongst gay men in Sydney
In gay couples where one partner is HIV-positive and the
other HIV-negative, an undetectable viral load is associated with
unprotected anal sex, according to a study conducted in Sydney and
presented as a poster to the Fifteenth International AIDS Conference in
Bangkok last week.
